This course provides comprehensive training in ultrasonography fundamentals, focusing on the physics of ultrasound and its applications in bovine reproduction. Participants will review the anatomy and physiology of the bovine reproductive system, learning to accurately interpret ultrasound images of the open uterus, uterine horns, uterine infections, pregnancies, gestational age, cotyledons, fetal anomalies, fetal demise, and using an extension arm for late-stage pregnancy examinations in beef cattle.
Through guided hands-on sessions and live demonstrations, attendees will refine their gynecological examination skills in beef cattle. The curriculum covers the identification of reproductive tract structures in ultrasound images and practical exercises with live cattle to evaluate the uterus for infection, pregnancy, twins, and cotyledons. Additionally, there will be a review of common bovine fetal anomalies and methods to determine fetal gestational age and fetal demise.
Participants will also master the functionality and controls of ultrasound machines, regardless of make or model. This training will enhance their proficiency in image interpretation and optimizing image quality by adjusting key settings universal to ultrasound machines.
With 5 hours of classroom theory and 7 hours of hands-on practice with live cattle, this course ensures that attendees become adept at performing reproductive examinations and interpreting ultrasound images in beef cows.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Attendees will gain comprehensive knowledge of ultrasonography fundamentals and best practices, including the physics of ultrasound and its specific applications in bovine reproduction. This includes mastering universal machine functionality, key settings, and image interpretation techniques applicable to any ultrasound machine, regardless of make, model, or brand.
The program’s focus on practical skills development ensures that attendees become proficient in performing reproductive examinations in beef cattle using ultrasound. They will develop expertise in interpreting reproductive system anatomy in ultrasound images, concentrating on the open uterus, uterine horns, and uterine infections. Additionally, attendees will refine their skills in gynecological examinations for open uteruses and pregnancies at various gestational stages, including the identification of twins, common bovine fetal anomalies, and fetal demise. They will also practice using an extension arm for later-stage pregnancies and learn to identify cotyledons in ultrasound images.
Participants will leave the course equipped with the skills to conduct herd pregnancy checks and thorough reproductive examinations of beef cattle. This includes assessing the open uterus, evaluating uterine health, diagnosing pregnancies at all gestational stages, determining the viability and gestational age of pregnancies, identifying and confirming twin pregnancies, and recognizing common bovine fetal anomalies and fetal demise.
In addition to reviewing and discussing numerous ultrasound images and videos covering these topics, attendees will gain practical, real-world experience through 7 hours of guided on-farm practice with live cattle.
