Key considerations
Ultrasound scanners come in all shapes and sizes, and it can be difficult to know where to start. You can spend as little as $1,000 or up to $150,000. Rest assured, we’ve done the work to ensure safe, high-quality ultrasound equipment so you don’t have to.
As a breeder, owning your own ultrasound can become an invaluable part of your breeding program, but choosing the right machine is essential. The internet is full of ‘amazing’ deals, but there are 4 key things to be aware of when choosing an ultrasound machine:
Image quality | A poor-quality scanner offers low image resolution resulting in grainy images, which makes interpreting them accurately difficult. Machines can look the same on the outside and be of wildly different quality on the inside! |
---|---|
Probe type | Many scanners use dated probe technology resulting in poor quality scans, and a frustrating and challenging experience. Some older-style mechanical probes vibrate, which can be disturbing for some animals. A quality, the electronic probe will make a world of difference. |
Warranty | Ensure a warranty of at least 12 months from a company you can go back to easily. |
Training and support | We are your one-stop solution for best-in-class portable ultrasound machines and the education and support to ensure your success. |
The internet is full of amazing deals but being aware of these four critical considerations will ensure you make the right purchase for your breeding practice.
Choosing the right probe
The varying footprints and frequencies of the Micro-Convex Probe makes it ideal for the following scenarios:
All cat breeds, Chihuahua, Toy Poodle, Pekingese, Corgi, Cocker Spaniel, Labrador/ Retriever, German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Standard Poodle, Border Collie, Doberman, Yorkshire Terrier, Dachshund, West Island White Terrier, Whippit, Shitzu, etc.
Bernese Mountain Dog, Old English Sheep Dog, Newfoundland, Irish Wolfhound, Saint Bernard, etc.

The best technique for pregnancy detection
Ultrasound offers a safe, comfortable, and convenient alternative to confirm pregnancy, fetal viability, and fetal growth without radiation exposure to mothers and puppies.
Breeders can learn to use ultrasound to successfully confirm pregnancy around 28 days post ovulation, get an idea of how many puppies or kittens to anticipate, know when a bitch has whelped her last puppy, and confirm and manage single puppy syndrome appropriately.
It can be costly, yes, and there is somewhat of a learning curve. But at ViiSona, we are committed to helping you every step of the way. Offering an array of financing options to get you started, all the way through ultrasound training and additional support, we are here to ensure your breeding success.
